Digital photography work flow

I am trying to convince my boss that now is the time to get a digital camera for our work. I am planning on the Nikon D-50 and have some questions based on my research to date.
How many of you use the "RAW" format for your recorded images?
If so, how much time do you spend manipulating these RAW images (workflow) in one of the various software packages to get a final product? (& Is Nikon's good enough, or is there a better aftermarket one?)
Conversly, is the high resolution "jpeg" that a digital SLR produces good enough for our purposes and the "RAW" format more effort that it is worth?
Looking forward to your input
