Gerald:

These are interesting comments but are there papers on the subject with supporting test data as to the facts you describe? The only scientific test data I have found were the tests conducted at Factory Mutual. These tests took place over 10 years and in none of the test scenarios did they have a secondary fire started by a rocketing aerosol. Of course this is not saying it can never happen, but only the findings of their test. There is no question as to their rocketing ability, but based on testing conducted by the industry, there seems to be some question as to the information as to them starting secondary fires being valid. In the Factory Mutual test, I believe they did have secondary fire caused by the ignition of the product jetting from the container. The Factory Mutual test did show how aerosols can aid in the growth of a fire.

I, like many others have heart the tails of aerosols rocketing and starting secondary fires, but the documentation on these incidents, when investigated, have been questionable at best. This appears to be one of those areas where everyone knows about what takes place but there is little to no scientific testing to support the facts. What may have been true in years past may not be correct today. As an example is the fact that the propellants used in aerosol at the time of the K-Mart fire may not be used today.

I would suggest anyone wanting scientific test data on the subject contact the Chemical Specialties Manufacturers Association.

Jim
