The requirement to act with "ordinary" or "reasonable" care is mandatory. A "standard of care" for a professional is what a reasonable and prudent professional would do in like or similar circumstances. To judge whether the coduct is reasonable, what better evidence would there be than to look at that professions "standard of care"? This ties into Frye and Daubert, since a 'standard of care' is "generally accetped" by the profession.
