When Avagadro published his idea that equal volumes of different gases contain the same number of molecules, it took half a century for the concept to be accepted because the Great Pumbah Dalton belittled the idea. Evetually, Cannizaro convinced his peers that Avagadro was right. If Dalton had been a little less vociferous, the matter might have been resolved more quickly and chemistry could have made the quantum leap much sooner.
