There is also the problem that you need a surface adjacent to the fire origin to be able to "preserve" any related fire origin pattern(s). But what if that surface is significantly destroyed or consumed very early in the progression of the fire (e..g. stacked cardboard boxes in middle of compartment) or if no adjacent surfaces to the fire origin exist? There are a number of fundamental problems that challenge the scientific reliability of using patterns to determine fire origin as a methodology.
