I'm not sure about the error rate of CFI calculator specifically, but take a look at 921 figures 22.4.9.3(a) and (b). The yellow boxes "Hand calculation methods" are basically, if not exactly, the formulas used by CFI calculator. They are all empirical based algebraic expressions of various fire dynamics phenomena. So that will give you an idea of the difference between hand calculation methods, zone models (e.g. CFAST), and field models (e.g. FDS).
