In working with both cryogenic and compressed oxidizer gases (O2, F2, ClF3, ClF5, higher nitrogen oxides, N2F4) we always had to be very careful that valves, regulators and pressure gauges were not contaminated with greases or other organics. I have encountered a number of such fires (and explosions) in pilot plant operations which were caused by technicians failing to remove all traces of contaminants prior to assembly.
