More seriously, I just wanted to say that I appreciate the position of NAFI to leave the copyright to the author(s) of the article for the reasons you quote. I think it is a wise decision and definitely a good practice for the fire investigation community.
Unfortunately, many scientific journals are published by big companies such as Elsevier or Blackwell, and these guys are out there to make money. This is the reason why they retain copyright of the article so that they have the monopoly of the publication. Imagine how much money an article such as the sequencing of chromosome 21 brought to the journal "science"!!!
