Presumption of Inncemce

Much was written in the discussion on Accidental Fires & the Presumption of Evidence. There was even a definition of Presumption of Innocence taken from Blacks. I don't think anyone here is suggesting that this concept be abandoned. But in reading the posts, there appeared (to my mind) to be confusion.

The presumption of innocence is a legal concept that requires a jury to go into a case with no pre conceived ideas, and that the jurors will not vote to convict until evidence beyond reasonable doubt has been shown.

Is anyone suggesting that there be a presumption of innocence in investigations? What is a 'person of interest' if there is a presumption of innocence? In homicide investigations, it is not uncommon for persons to have to provide an alibi (ie, prove their innocence) in order to be removed from consideration as a suspect.

I am an engineer, and so these questions regarding guilt and innocence are not factors in my usual caseload. I would like to hear what others say.

Thanks...
