You are right that in our effort to simplify the classification of fires into just four categories we need to bend the facts. The only reason you will ever find to support why we do this is because we have always done it this way. I know that is not a good answer, but that is what I get most of the time. Many investigators are starting to list all the information in their conclusion and are not trying to have a one size fits all classification system. Where this classification system was a problem in the past, once we added the need to know the intent of the person it really became difficult.
What would you think of doing away with the old classification system?
