I think we’re getting into semantics when it comes to the words data and evidence. NFPA 921 states the following:
Where terms are not defined in this chapter or within another chapter, they shall be
defined using their ordinarily accepted meanings within the context in which they are used. Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition, shall be the source for the ordinarily accepted meaning.
The words data and evidence are not defined in 921.
Because the words were not defined in 921 I went to the dictionary mentioned in 921. That dictionary defines “data” as being factual information (such as measurements or statistics) used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation. “Evidence” is defined as something the furnishes proof.
Based on the definitions above, I believe that data is factual information. This factual information furnishes proof.
If you have different authorized National Fire Protection Association definitions please guide me to them.
