Those who destroy their original notes should never claim that they follow the scientific method. Any scientist worth his salt realizes that even with the best of intentions, transcription errors and omissions may occur.
Many investigators destroy their notes because "smarter people" tought them to do so.
The obvious original reason for note destruction was to protect the investigator from impeachment.
Have I seen cases in which the discovery of lost field notes affected the outcome of the case? Yes.
