The content of 921 is not mandatory except insofar as it cites state or federal laws. However, the document has received enough acceptance in both the legal and technical communities as a learned treatise to make it highly inadvisable to ignore its recommendations without a good reason to do so. You have offered no such reason to support the argument that it is acceptable to destroy field notes. Had you been on the witness stand rather than in a relatively benign forum, you would have indeed have had had cause to sweat.
