You are absolutely correct in your statement, however there are those that what to stretch the responsibility further. Some of those have posted on this question. The problem that seems to come about is when the investigator is not kept in the loop by the client, and to his knowledge there will be not further action on the part of his client. Then the person handling the file gives it to another department within the company and that person makes a decision to go forward with some litigation. Two years later the investigator gets a subpoena saying appear in court for this case. At this point should he be held responsible for no longer having the notes?
